He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews? And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
