Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew? Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he. Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion. Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.
