A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young: And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man. O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few. And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped. That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches. But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over. And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.
