Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib: and (when) he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water; for he mourned because of the trespass of them of the captivity.
Howbeit thou art just in all that is come upon us; for thou hast dealt truly, but we have done wickedly;
The plowers plowed upon my back; They made long their furrows.
Righteous art thou, O Jehovah, when I contend with thee; yet would I reason the cause with thee: wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they at ease that deal very treacherously?
Therefore hath Jehovah watched over the evil, and brought it upon us; for Jehovah our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth, and we have not obeyed his voice.
O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, let thine anger and thy wrath, I pray thee, be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are round about us.
