And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto Jehovah. Then said Jehovah unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or not. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not. And thou shalt remember all the way which Jehovah thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or not. who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end: that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many (of Israel) as had not known all the wars of Canaan; And they were (left), to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses. And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast salt therein, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or miscarrying. But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot. But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol; For he will receive me. (Selah) Thou broughtest a vine out of Egypt: Thou didst drive out the nations, and plantedst it.
